Description

Made exclusively from our Wilyabrup vineyard, the wine is hand crafted from start to finish and highlights the culmination of everything we have learnt since our first release in 1987. Lifted, concentrated, complex aromas with dark berries and blueberries at the fore, underscored by cedar, liquorice, and a hint of bayleaf. The floral lift is reinforced by the Petit Verdot complimenting the savoury characters of the Cabernet by bringing cassis and a lilac floral note. A wine of depth and suppleness, complexity and vitality. A lovely marriage of the three varieties. The fleshy core of the wine is generously fruit driven, with blueberry and dark chocolate present, yet the delicate acidity and fine, dusty, savoury tannins provide the framework for the fruit to sit in.

"An excellent wine that’s so good now in its youth but will promise so much more in time. It’s a glorious dark purple-red hue with loads of aromas of florals, spice and menthol, all enticing. Same with the flavours of perfectly ripe fruit, spicy cedary oak superbly integrated, and beautifully shaped tannins with refreshing acidity working across the mid-weighted palate. You’d call this elegant." Jane Faulkner

"As I'm tasting this in June 2026, it’s bound tight. As good Cabernet should be at the start of its life. It makes me want to buy a case and drink one each year. Pencil shavings, cassis and clove. Everything is subtle, yet present in spades. Figure that one out. In the mouth, it’s equally exciting, with plush fruit, fine but abundant tannins, and an even palate weight that carries from front to back before unfurling into a long, sustained finish. I can still taste it. Wilyabrup truly is a wonderland for Australian Cabernet, and this wine is a case in point."

"This is a cracking good wine from a great vintage, bringing together three of the classic varieties synonymous with Bordeaux. The season allowed for a long ripening period, which particularly suited cabernet, enabling flavours to develop gradually and completely. Perfumed aromas of violets, blackcurrant and leafy bay leaf notes emerge immediately. The palate reveals seamless integration of superfine tannins and fine-grained oak supporting high-quality fruit. It has a beautiful, seductive perfume and a palate that is both effortless and focused, extending through to a very long finish. This is high-class stuff."

The 2023 vintage was defined by its consistent and gentle weather of cool evenings and temperate daytime temperatures. This allowed the fruit to ripen over a longer period, the ongoing effect of which lends itself to dense flavour production and fine tannin ripening. The primary fruit for this wine was grown at the estate in Wilyabrup and this includes some of the older Cabernet Sauvignon on the estate planted in 1986. 3 clones of Cabernet were included in this blend - clone 412, 126 and Houghton Clone. The wine has been supplemented with Malbec and Petit Verdot.

  • Winemaking

The fruit was picked in the cool hours of the early morning and allowed to cold soak for 48 hours before fermentation was encouraged. Gentle pump overs to extract the tannins and colour throughout the ferment were watched carefully to ensure the tannins remained soft yet structural. The wine was transferred to a combination of coopers of new and used French oak barriques, hogsheads and puncheons. The wine is 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Malbec and 5% Petit Verdot. Initial fermentation on skins in open topped stainless-steel fermenters, before maturation in 100% French oak - new and used.
