Name and role at Lenton Brae?
Edward Tomlinson. Winemaker.
How long have you worked at Lenton Brae?
I helped plant the vineyard in 1983 whilst still at high school and have had more than a passing interest ever since.
What do you enjoy about your job? (assuming you do of course!)
Its varied nature...and the feeling at the end of vintage.
Do you have a favourite Lenton Brae wine?
I try not to play favourites. All the different wine styles get the same level of attention.
What do you do when you’re not at Lenton Brae?
My daughter and girlfriend live in Perth, so when I'm not at Lenton Brae I'm either with them or driving to be with them. Work can sometimes take me on sales trips interstate or occasionally overseas.
Within your role at Lenton Brae, what are you plans for the medium to long term?
I'm determined to make a varietal Merlot with body and texture. There are a few good examples locally, but for me, nothing like the best from France and Italy. Fortunately, my boss is very patient as this will take years to achieve.
Best (non-wine) attribute of the Margaret River wine region?
The surf. I'm more of a drowner than a surfer, but there's no better way to start (or finish) the day than with a swim. It's good for a hangover too, I'm told.
Favourite destination?
Rottnest Island, off the WA coast. Visiting has the same effect on me regardless of the time of year.
Best wine moment?
1961 Cheval Blanc.
If you were a wine, what would you be?
A mixed case!
